Well, it has been nearly four months since we all got together at the Taj Mahal with all sorts of emotions. Nervous, excited, looking forward to the challenge,
looking to change our level of activity, looking for a toilet (well those who had enjoyed a pre event meal the night before at Raj's House of Curried Cured Meats were),
and now here we are with just five days to go. So how has the event changed your level of activity? What challenges have you set and achieved? How much less puffing
is going on when you take the stairs? How do you feel?
As we reflect on an incredible event that gives you 125 days to enable genuine change, new habits, and real results, we thought we'd share with you a few snippets
from some of the wonderful stories and quotes we receive at GCC HQ on a daily basis. Enjoy, they're motivation in themselves.
"From the start of GCC '08 to today I've lost 54 kilos (119lbs), and gained fitness & longevity"
Katherine, Tabcorp
"I don't think I have ever laughed so much as I did this morning reading "Did you Know" on how to protect yourself from black bear attacks in Yosemite National
Park. I enjoy the commentaries very much. Laughter is as good for you as the walking but much gentler on the body!"
Kerry, BHP Billiton, Worsley Alumina
"Thank you for the kick start that I really needed and I feel that now I would like to continue everyday, even when the challenge finishes"
Brian, BHP Billiton
"I have lost 30kg and will soon find out just how low my cholesterol level has sunk. Feel on top of the world!"
David, NAB.
"I am quite excited with the GCC, my life has changed since I started with this challenge because I am getting more and more active every day"
Nestle Spain Participant
"What a great feeling!"
Katherine, Direct Energy
"I am excited to see the changes in my body getting back in shape. I have lost 11 lbs and just ran my first 7 minute mile since college."
Denny, Direct Energy
"In 5 weeks I have shed 9kg and am striding out. Have gone from a nominal speed of 1km an hour to a phenomenal 1km per HALF HOUR!"
Nova, Te Wananga o Aotearoa
"Thanks GCC for getting us motivated to be healthy."
Tracy, Vtech Communications
Do you have a GCC story to tell? Just jot it down and post it on the community page because we'd love to hear it.
Enjoy the final five days of GCC 2009.
The Crew at GCC
End of event things to know.

- Your individual Certificate of Participation will be available to download on Wednesday, September 30 when you log into the GCC site.
- There will be a final, bumper edition of The Walk Talk, with all the event final results and statistics, coming out to you on October 2nd.

While the value in sustaining an active lifestyle beyond the GCC is important, so too is developing a healthy eating strategy. Here are a few things you might want to consider for your eating plans.
- Fish - tinned and fresh as often as possible.
- Fruit and vegetables - the cornerstone of a balanced diet.
- Water - stay hydrated.
- Nuts (especially almonds) seeds, prunes, dates and figs - a great way to add fibre and dietary variety.
- Go for the dark chocolate - it's been said that nine out of ten people love chocolate and the tenth person is a liar?
- Moderate your intake of fast food - eliminating foods from a diet has been shown to be sustainable.
- Watch your portions - especially on days when you're less active.
- Keep an eye on saturated fats and trans fats - look to increase flaxseed and canola oils instead.
- Get the kids thinking about good food - set an example for them.
- Wine - 150mls a day has been shown to be very beneficial.

The Guinness World Record for the longest walk, is held by Arthur Blessitt who is sort of the 'Forrest Gump' of walking and religious pilgrims.
On Christmas Day 1969, after Jesus apparently spoke to him and carrying a 12 foot cross 'for Jesus', he walked out the door and...well...he kept on
walking, and is still walking today. So far he has walked 38,102 miles (61,319 km) through 315 countries (been through a few more than once obviously),
Island Groups and Territories, and he has walked on all seven Continents including Antarctica.

What would be your dream walk?
|
|
|
|
|
|
A quite diverse spread of responses to which of the four options would be your dream walk. In global terms of popularity, The Inca Trail has had trek permits capped at 500 a day and is
booked out months in advance during high season, that's 180,000 walkers a year. New York gets 47 million visitors a year (yes 47 million!), so while they are not there as strictly a
'walking holiday' there's plenty of steps taken anyway. 270,882 people visited the main attractions in the Scottish Highlands last year while 8,000 trekkers made their way to the
Everest region up a 'touch' from the eight permits granted in 1966.

Wigan Council, DC Adminblers, Perth, Lake District in the UK
 |
Quick GCC did you know? - Wigan is home to the annual World Pie Eating Championship. The competition has been held since 1992
'Wiganers' are sometimes referred to as "pie-eaters" by their rival towns (so not really a term of endearment), and this is not from the
pie eating competition, but because during a General Strike in 1926 miners were nearly starved to death and had to eat 'humble pie' and
break the strike.

Cadbury UK, Joey's Angels, Walking through the Brecon Beacons
 |
Quick GCC did you know? - Well over half the GCC teams have already passed through the Brecon Beacons in this year's GCC course (if you average over 8,500 steps a day you will have too).
During that visit, we learnt about the SAS selection training held in these mountains, but did you also know that Welsh Ponies graze wild through this region. Before you think Pony = small
horse = Christmas present for daughter, keep in mind that some of these 'pony's' can grow up to 15 hands (not creepy alien looking things with 75 fingers) - it means 60 inches, or 5 foot tall,
from the ground to the base of the neck.

Nestle UK,The Pension's Crew, Here's me on Cairngorm Mountain, UK
 |
Quick GCC did you know? - That pile of rocks Sharon is leaning against is called a cairn (carnedd in Welsh and carn to the Scots and Irish). They are man made piles of rocks
that are used for many different purposes and have been made by humans since the Bronze Age (that time in human history when fake tan was all the rage, 1200-3,300 BC). In this case,
the Cairn indicates the summit of Mt Cairngorm but they are also for navigation, marking burial spots, or commemorating an event that occurred in a particular spot.

Bluescope Steel ANZMSB,Pavement Pounders, The walk was from Dromana to Rye, the photo taken at Rye front beach.
 |
Quick GCC did you know? - Rye is a popular tourist location on the Mornington Peninsula for residents of Melbourne, Australia, and sits on the foreshore of Port
Phillip Bay. Rye Pier (that big thing behind the 'Pavement Pounders') was first built in 1860 to enable ships from Melbourne to transport lime from the local Peninsula
kilns to the city. This lime was instrumental in the development of many new buildings and means that there's probably a little bit of Rye in much of historic Melbourne.
So, as the locals say 'Catch ya in the Rye'...actually we just made that up, but it's quite memorable don't you think?

The Athlete's Foot
The Athlete's Foot $50 Gift Card.
What better way to get motivated than with a new pair of shoes? A walking shoe has a broader strike zone through the heel, it's more flexible through the forefoot to help push you forward and it's lighter which means walking further with less effort, so you can increase your fitness. Let the Fitting Experts at The Athlete's Foot recommend the correct shoe for you.
